A Packing List for a High-Altitude Casino Weekend

A weekend in Black Hawk packs differently than a standard casino trip, mostly because of the elevation and the mountain weather that comes with it. Here's what our front desk actually recommends when guests ask.

Layers, Even in Summer

At nearly 8,000 feet, mornings and evenings run cool even in July, while a sunny midday can feel surprisingly warm. A light jacket or fleece packed alongside summer clothes covers most of the swing. In winter, that layering matters even more — expect genuinely cold temperatures, not just "mountain chilly."

Real Footwear

Gregory Street's sidewalks are a mix of old brick and modern concrete, occasionally uneven, and genuinely icy in winter without much warning. Comfortable, closed-toe shoes with real tread handle the walk between properties far better than what most guests default to for a casino weekend.

Sun Protection, Year-Round

UV exposure increases with elevation, and it's easy to underestimate at nearly 8,000 feet, especially on a bright winter day with snow reflecting extra light back up. Sunscreen and sunglasses are worth packing in any season, not just summer.

Water Bottle

The mountain air here runs dry, and dehydration sneaks up faster than most guests expect, especially if you're also having a drink or two on the gaming floor. A refillable water bottle is a small thing that makes a real difference over a two- or three-night stay.

If you take any medication for altitude sickness or plan to ask your doctor about one before the trip, pack it rather than plan to fill a prescription once you're here — pharmacy options in Black Hawk itself are limited.

Something for Dinner

None of our dining rooms enforce a strict dress code, but The Assay House leans toward smart-casual for dinner service — guests in ski gear or pool attire occasionally feel out of place there on a Saturday night. One slightly nicer outfit covers it.

What You Can Leave at Home

Cash for parking isn't necessary if you're self-parking in our garage, and most guests overpack for the pool deck given that towels and loungers are provided. Beyond a swimsuit, there's not much extra gear needed for the Clear Creek Pool Deck itself.
