Rocky Mountain Day Trips From Black Hawk

Where to go on an afternoon off, from Central City to the high alpine lakes above Nederland.

Not every trip to Black Hawk has to stay on Gregory Street the whole time. Several worthwhile stops sit within an hour's drive, and a few are close enough to fit into a single afternoon between check-in and dinner.

Central City (10 Minutes)

Black Hawk's neighboring gaming town sits just up the Central City Parkway and has its own distinct character — a steeper, more compact downtown built during the height of the original gold rush, with the Central City Opera House still hosting summer performances. Worth an hour even if you're not stopping at another casino.

Golden (30 Minutes)

Home to the Colorado School of Mines and the Coors brewery, Golden makes an easy half-day trip with a walkable downtown, a decent brewery tour, and the Clear Creek History Park. It's also the fastest route back toward Denver if your trip up the canyon left you wanting a flatter drive home.

Nederland & the Peak to Peak Highway (45 Minutes)

North on Highway 119, Nederland sits at the base of the Indian Peaks Wilderness and marks the southern end of the Peak to Peak Highway, one of Colorado's designated scenic byways. Barker Reservoir right in town is an easy stop; the more ambitious alpine lakes higher in the wilderness require a hike and are best attempted earlier in the day.

The Peak to Peak Highway is genuinely one of the better fall foliage drives in the state — late September is when the aspen groves along the route peak most years.

Eldora Mountain Resort (60 Minutes)

The closest ski area to Black Hawk, reachable via Nederland. Our winter Powder & Play package runs a scheduled shuttle here, but it's also an easy self-drive if you'd rather set your own hours on the mountain.

Idaho Springs (35 Minutes)

Back down Clear Creek Canyon toward I-70, Idaho Springs has its own mining history, a handful of hot springs facilities, and a good starting point if you want to add the Mount Evans scenic drive to your day — one of the highest paved roads in North America, seasonal and weather-dependent.

The Takeaway

Central City works as a quick add-on to an evening you're already spending in Black Hawk. Golden and Idaho Springs both work as half-day trips. Nederland and Eldora are the better picks if you want a full day away from Gregory Street.
